Reflection on Babies
A bit of talcum
Is always walcum.

Riflessione sui neonati
Di talco un pochetto
è sempre bene accetto.

The Parent
Children aren’t happy with nothing to ignore,
And that’s what parents were created for.

Samson Agonistes
I test my bath before I sit,
And I’m always moved to wonderment
That what chills the finger not a bit
Is so frigid upon the fundament.

In bagno

Song of the Open Road
I think that I shall never see
A billboard as lovely as a tree.
Perhaps unless the billboards fall,
I'll never see a tree at all.

Canzone della strada
Penso che mai potrò osservare
un cartellone bello come un filare.
E, se i cartelloni non cadranno giù,
un albero non lo vedrò proprio più.

Requiem
There was a young belle of old Natchez
Whose garments were always in patchez.
When comment arose
On the state of her clothes,
She drawled, When Ah itchetz, Ah scratchez!

Requiem
C’era una giovane bellona di Vercelli
i cui abiti erano sempre a brandelli.
Quando commenti furono uditi
sullo stato dei suoi vestiti,
strascicò: “Quando mi caricano, sfracelli!”

A jolly young fellow from Yuma
A jolly young fellow from Yuma
Told an elephant joke to a puma;
Now his skeleton lies
Beneath hot western skies -
the puma had no sense of huma.

Il simpaticone di Yuma
Un candido simpaticone di Yuma
raccontò la burla di un elefante a un puma;
ora il suo scheletro è steso
all’Ovest, sotto un cielo acceso:
il puma non aveva il senso dell’huma.

Lather as You Go
Beneath this slab
John Brown is stowed.
He watched the ads
And not the road.

Ricorda tu che passi
Sotto questa pietra tombale
riposa John Nevada.
Guardava la pubblicità stradale
e non la strada.

The Jellyfish
Who wants my jellyfish?
I’m not sellyfish!

La medusa
Chi vuole il mio celenterato?
Non sono celenteressato!

The Fly
The Lord in His wisdom made the fly,
And then forgot to tell us why.

I ditteri

The Turtle
The turtle lives twixt plated decks
Which practically conceal its sex.
I think it clever of the turtle
In such a fix to be so fertile.

La tartaruga
La tartaruga vive tra piastre così dappresso
che praticamente rinchiudono il suo sesso.
Penso che sia davvero scienza
esser così fertile in tale contingenza.

The Ant
The ant has made himself illustrious
Through constant industry industrious.
So what?
Would you be calm and placid,
If you were full of formic acid?

La formica
La formica ha reso se stessa famosa
attraverso una costante attività laboriosa.
E allora?
Saresti calmo e placido
se fossi pieno di formico acido?

The Wasp
The wasp and all his numerous family
I look upon as a major calamity.
He throws open his nest with prodigality,
But I distrust his waspitality.

La vespa
La vespa e la sua numerosa comunità
le considero una grande calamità.
Offre il suo nido con prodigalità,
ma non mi fido della sua vespitalità.

The Lion
Oh, weep for Mr. ad Mrs. Bryan!
He was eaten by a lion;
following which, the lion’s lioness
up and swallowed Bryan’s Bryaness.

Il leone
Oh, piangiamo i coniugi Carbone!
Lui fu divorato da un leone;
poi si alzò del leone la leonessa
che sbranò di Carbone la Carbonessa.

The porcupine
Any hound a porcupine nudges
can’t be blamed for harboring grudges.
I know one hound that laughed all winter
at a porcupine that sat on a splinter.

The praying mantis
From whence arrived the praying mantis?
From outer space, or lost Atlantis?
Glimpse the grin, green metal mug
at masks the pseudo-saintly bug,
orthopterous, also carnivorous,
and faintly whisper, Lord deliver us..

La mantide religiosa
Da dove giunse la mantide religiosa?
Dallo spazio siderale, da Atlantide misteriosa?
Guardate il ghigno, il grugno verde-peridoto
che indossa l’insetto pseudo-devoto,
ortottero, carnivoro vieppiù,
e sussurrate: “Dio, liberaci tu”.

The shrimp
A shrimp who sought his lady shrimp
Could catch no glimpse,
Not even a glimp.
At times, translucence
Is rather a nuisance.

Il gamberetto
Un gamberetto che cercava la sua gamberetta
non ne vedeva la siluetta,
neanche una virgoletta.
A volte essere trasparente
è proprio un inconveniente.

The termite
Some primal termite knocked on wood
And tasted it, and found it good!
And that is why your Cousin May
Fell through the parlor floor today.

La termite
Una qualche termite primordiale bussò il legno,
lo assaggiò, lo trovò degno.
Ecco perché la cugina May, un giorno patetico,
cadde attraverso il pavimento del centro estetico.

Celery
Celery, raw,
Develops the jaw.
But celery, stewed,
Is more quietly chewed.

Il sedano
Il sedano, com’è in natura,
sviluppa la dentatura.
Ma il sedano, stufato,
è più comodamente masticato.

The chipmunk
My friends all know that I am shy,
But the chipmunk is twice and shy and I.
He moves with flickering indecision
Like stripes across the television.
He’s like the shadow of a cloud,
Or Emily Dickinson read aloud.

The centipede
I objurgate the centipede,
A bug we do not really need.
At sleepy-time he beats a path
Straight to the bedroom or the bath.
You always wallop where he’s not,
Or, if he is, he makes a spot.

The cuckoo
Cuckoos lead Bohemian lives
They fail as husbands and as wives
Therefore they cynically disparage
Everybody else’s marriage.

Il cuculo
I cuculi conducono vite scapigliate,
falliscono come membri di coppie sposate,
perciò denigrano cinicamente
i matrimoni di tutta l’altra gente.

The duck
Behold the duck,
It does not cluck.
A cluck it lacks,
It quacks.
It is specially fond
Of a puddle or pond.
When it dines or sups,
It bottoms ups.

L’anatra
Osserva l’anatroccolo,
non fa un chioccolo,
non schiamazza,
starnazza.
Gli piace in modo particolare
una pozza dove sguazzare.
Se mangia o deve bere,
alza il sedere.

The hunter
The hunter crouches in his blind
‘Neath camouflage of every kind
And conjures up a quacking noise
To lend allure to his decoys.
This grown-up man, with pluck and luck,
Is hoping to outwit a duck.

Il cacciatore
Il cacciatore nascosto si acquatta
dietro camuffamenti d’ogni fatta

Crossing the border
Senescence begins
And middle age ends
The day your descendents
Outnumber your friends.

Passare il confine
Incomincia la senescenza
e la maturità se ne va via
quando la tua discendenza
è più numerosa della tua compagnia.

On middle age
Middle age is when you've met so many people
That every new person you meet reminds you of someone else.

The Cobra
The cobra's mouth is filled with venom,
He walks upon his duodenum.
He who attempts to tease a cobra
Is soon a sadder he, and sobra.

The Abominable Snowman
I’ve never seen an abominable snowman,
I’m hoping not to see one,
I’m also hoping, if I do,
That it will be a wee one.

The Octopus
Tell me, O Octopus, I begs
Is those things arms, or is they legs?
I marvel at thee, Octopus;
If I were thou, I'd call me Us.

La piovra
Scusa, piovra, se te lo chiedo in faccia:
sono quelle cose gambe o braccia?
Piovra, una cosa mi meraviglia poi:
se fossi in Te, mi chiamerei Noi.

The Ostrich
The ostrich roams the great Sahara.
Its mouth is wide, its neck is narra.
It has such long and lofty legs,
I'm glad it sits to lay its eggs.

Untitled
Enter, breath; Breath, slip out;
Blood, be channeled,
And wind about.
O, blessed breath and blood which strive
To keep this body of mine alive!
O gallant breath and blood
Which choose
To wage the battle
They must lose.

Senza titolo
Entra, respiro;
respiro, sguscia fuori.
Sangue, scorri in giro
e ossigena i pori.
Oh, beati sangue e respiro, in lotta accanita
per tener questo mio corpo in vita!
Oh, prodi sangue e respirazione
che hanno scelto cocciuti
di combattere una tenzone
in cui saranno battuti.

The Germ
A mighty creature is the germ,
Though smaller than the pachyderm.
His customary dwelling place
Is deep within the human race.
His childish pride he often pleases
By giving people strange diseases.
Do you, my poppet, feel infirm?
You probably contain a germ.

Il bacillo
Una potente creatura è il bacillo,
sebbene più piccolo del mandrillo.
La sua abituale dimora
è nel profondo delle umane interiora.
Il suo infantile orgoglio spesso viene fuori
causando alla gente strani dolori
Bambino mio, ti senti come brillo?
Probabilmente hai dentro un bacillo.

The Cantaloupe
One cantaloupe is ripe and lush,
Another’s green, another’s mush.
I’d buy a lot more cantaloupe
If I possessed a fluoroscope.

Il melone
Un melone è maturo e gustoso,
un altro è verde, un terzo è melmoso.
Comprerei molto più melone
con un fluoroscopio a disposizione.

The Kitten
The trouble with a kitten is
THAT:
eventually it becomes a
CAT.

Il micino
Il problema con un micino è questo
FATTO:
inevitabilmente lui diventa un
GATTO.

On His Children
Be it a girl, or one of the boys,
It is scarlet all over its avoirdupois,
It is red, it is boiled; could the obstetrician
Have possibly been a lobstertrician?

Il figlio
Sia una femminuccia o un maschietto,
è tutto scarlatto l’angioletto.
È rosso, è bollito: e se l’ostetrico
fosse stato un aragostetrico?

The Lama
The one-L lama, he's a priest,
The two-L llama, he's a beast
And I would bet a silk pajama

There isn't any three-L lllama.

The ancient bride
An elderly bride of Port Jervis
Was quite understandably nervis.
Since her apple-cheeked groom,
With three wives in the tomb,
Kept insuring her during the service.

La vecchia sposa
Un’anziana sposa di Santa Teresa
era abbastanza comprensibilmente tesa.
Così il suo sposo di guancia rossa,
con già tre mogli nella fossa,
continuò a incoraggiarla a entrare in chiesa.

The cow
The cow is of the bovine ilk;
One end is moo, the other, milk.

La mucca
Proviene la mucca da bovine schiatte;
